Through his diary,  Frederic Augustus James has allowed us to understand him on a more personal level.  As he endured his prison experiences, we see simple statements in his diary which allow us to see him as a man struggling to cope with his environment, taking steps as best he can to survive his prison confinement, experiencing concern and love for his family, and in particular his wife and children, and most of all, strengthening his belief and trust in God to support him in his present situation.  The profiles of Frederic James are as follows: 

 

1. A family man - relationship of a husband and a father of two

2. A man of faith  - God is his companion and his protector
3. Struggling to survive - a daily challenge against the hardships of prison life
